Male Fertility Issues – Varicocele

What is a varicocele and how does it affect male fertility?

A varicocele is an enlargement of the veins in your scrotum, similar to varicose veins that can occur in your legs.  This enlargement occurs when valves inside your veins along the spermatic cord prevent blood from flowing properly.  This causes the blood to pool, widening the veins, at times affecting male fertility by causing low sperm production and decreased sperm quality.

A varicocele may not be visible or felt, especially if you are lying down.  If there is pain, it can often be relieved by wearing tighter underwear or some kind of scrotal support, although this will not usually diminish the varicocele.  Your doctor will sometimes recommend surgery, especially if the varicocele returns or does not disappear on its own.  After surgery, sperm production and quality should increase after a few months.

How can natural medicine help?

If you suffer from varicoceles, or are recovering from surgery and would like some help improving your sperm numbers and morphology, natural medicine can help.  Nutritional counselling can help ensure that your diet and supplementation is ideal, and acupuncture and TCM can help your blood flow and reduce your likelihood of further varicocele.  Yoga can help improve sperm production, and massage therapy can help reduce stress and thereby make you more fertile.
