Fascial Stretch Therapy

What is Fascia?

Your fascia is the fibrous connective tissue that surrounds and connects your muscles, blood vessels and nerves.  When your body is under stress from lack of exercise, injury, or over-training, your fascia may thicken and shorten, often causing discomfort and pain.  This is when Fascial Stretch Therapy becomes a useful modality.

How Does Fascial Stretch Therapy Work?

At Yellow Gazebo Fascial Stretch Therapy (FST) is performed by a registered massage therapist and is therefore covered by insurance. FST works to treat your inflexible fascia at the joints, which helps to improve your range of motion while also improving your muscle strength and flexibility. Once this has been achieved, any pain you may have experienced will be reduced and you will experience greater performance.

A fascial stretch therapy session is much like a really good massage session. It is performed on a massage table using a combination of assisted mobility, stretching movements, and traditional massage techniques. Traction is a major component of FST as traction improves the quality of any stretch, opening up joint spaces and allowing for an increased range of motion as you stretch. Sometimes your FST practitioner will use straps to assist with obtaining a deeper stretch and achieve greater results, though a strap is not always necessary.

When experiencing your first FST session, be prepared to experience something completely different from what you may have experienced before, especially if you've not worked with different manual practitioner such as RMT's, chiropractors or physiotherapists. FST works on your muscles, nerves and fascia all at the same time. Different parts of your body may feel more mobilized during or after treatment, and you may feel "lighter" as a result.
