Stretch Beyond Limits: The Science and Benefits of Fascial Stretch Therapy
Now available with Tom Stratton and Luis Celestino, two of our amazing RMTs at Yellow Gazebo Wellness!
Have you ever felt like your body just can’t move the way it used to? Whether it’s stiffness in your hips, tension in your back, or a general sense of tightness, the problem might be more than just “tight muscles”—it could be your fascia.
What Is Fascia, and Why Does It Matter?
Fascia is a thin casing of connective tissue that surrounds and links your muscles, joints, nerves, blood vessels—even your organs. This web-like structure runs throughout your entire body, creating a continuous, dynamic support system.
When healthy, fascia allows for smooth, pain-free movement. But when it becomes restricted—due to poor posture, injury, inactivity, or chronic stress—it can contribute to pain, poor mobility, and even feelings of fatigue or instability.
According to the Fascia Research Society, restricted fascia can reduce joint range of motion by up to 50%, and fascial dysfunction has been linked to a variety of musculoskeletal complaints—from lower back pain to reduced athletic performance.
How Does Fascial Stretch Therapy Work?
Fascial Stretch Therapy (FST) is an advanced form of assisted stretching that targets fascia and joints, not just muscle tissue. At Yellow Gazebo, Tom and Luis, both Registered Massage Therapists, are trained in this technique—and because they’re RMTs, your session is insurance-billable under most plans.
In an FST session, you’ll remain fully clothed while your therapist gently guides your body through a series of dynamic, traction-based stretches. One leg is secured to the table to stabilize your pelvis and spine, allowing for safe, controlled movement through multiple planes.
The stretches work through full fascial chains—meaning they don’t just isolate one muscle, but release tension across the whole body.
What Sets FST Apart Is its Emphasis On:
Traction: Reduces compression in joints and improves joint capsule mobility
Neurological Reset: Slow, rhythmic movement reduces sympathetic nervous system dominance (i.e., “fight or flight”) and activates the parasympathetic system, helping the body relax
Functional Integration: Restores glide between layers of fascia to support better posture, fluid movement, and improved muscle coordination
What Are the Benefits?
Most people report that FST feels like a cross between a deep stretch and a gentle massage. The outcomes speak for themselves:
- Increased flexibility and mobility
- Pain and tension relief
- Improved athletic performance
- Better posture and alignment
- Enhanced recovery and sleep quality
- Reduced stress and anxiety
And because fascia responds well to consistent, mindful movement, FST can support long-term improvement in how you move and feel.
What to Expect
Come dressed in comfortable, stretchy clothing—sweatpants, yoga pants, or athletic shorts are ideal. There’s no oil, and no need to disrobe. Just relax and let Tom or Luis guide your body through a therapeutic flow of movement.
FST is covered under most massage therapy insurance plans, when booked with a registered massage therapist as "massage therapy."
