What causes muscle soreness?
Muscle soreness is very common, and can often involve more than one muscle. Your pain may be isolated to the muscles only, or may also involve your ligaments and tendons. Muscle soreness may also involve some joint pain. The causes of muscle pain vary, and may include the following:
- injury or trauma (also see athletic injuries)
- overuse
- tension or stress
- infection, such as the flu virus
- fibromyalgia
- connective tissue disorders such as lupus
- medications such as ACE inhibitors for lowering blood pressure or statins for lowering cholesterol
- electrolyte imbalance
Your doctor may prescribe anti-inflammatories or pain medication to help with your muscle soreness, and/or rest. If there is an underlying disease or infection causing your pain, be sure to follow your doctor's advice and to ask about possible drug interactions.
