Male Menopause

male menopause st clair west forest hill hillcrest torontoIs 'male menopause' a real condition?

Yes!  Referred to clinically as 'andropause', male menopause is caused by the gradual decline of the hormones testosterone and dehydroepiandrosterone. Not yet recognized by the World Health Organization as a disease, there are in fact a series of symptoms associated with the proven fact that as men reach middle age, they experience a gradual decline in male hormones.

Symptoms of male menopause include loss of libido, depression, and fatigue. Hormone replacement therapy can be prescribed.  However, as with women, hormone replacement therapy increases the risk of cancer (in men the cancer risk is prostate related).  Antidepressants are more safely administered, but still make sure that you discuss any possible side effects with your doctor and/or pharmacist.

How can natural therapy treat male menopause?

Acupuncture and TCM can help improve libido and sexual function, while at the same time alleviate depression and improve energy levels.  Diet modification, such as eliminating refined sugar and alcohol can help, as can exercise like yoga.   Massage therapy can help to lower your stress.
