Natural Medicine and Anxiety

Natural Medicine and Anxiety

Natural medicine and anxiety may be something you’ve considered before, or it may be a completely new idea. Some of us only ever experience anxiety on the lowest of levels, where stressors can affect us in other ways - for example making us more irritable. But many of us feel anxiety in sometimes overwhelming ways, so much so that we can feel completely controlled by our emotional state and unable to function well at all. And while there are medications that can be prescribed to help with anxiety, natural medicine can often help and oftentimes in quite profound ways.

What is natural medicine and anxiety?

Probably the most straight-forward and expected form of natural medicine and anxiety at Yellow Gazebo is psychotherapy. Psychotherapy is a great tool for exploring your thoughts and emotions, and can potentially help you find fantastic ways to minimize your feelings of anxiety in day-to-day settings.

What other natural medicines might help?

As an acupuncturist and practitioner of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), I’ve been very lucky to have had the opportunity to treat many people over the years for anxiety and anxiety-related concerns. And working alongside other health professionals of similar disciplines, I’ve been fortunate to see how these other natural therapies can combat what you might otherwise imagine would be out of scope of their abilities.

For example, chiropractic care is completely natural and yet can have a profound effect on your nervous system, and thus your moods. Theoretically, by having your spine adjusted to a balanced state your nerves should be firing optimally and your body should be in an optimal state, essentially enabling it to heal itself.

And although we talk about energy flow and energy blockage a lot, we acupuncturists basically see healing the body in the same way: by inserting needles into prescribed points in your body you kind of ‘shock’ your body into reacting to those specific points, and a reaction occurs whereby your body moves towards a state of better balance and thus better health. The same is true of other modalities of TCM, e.g. Chinese herbs, Tui Na (Chinese massage), cupping, and so on.

Osteopathy might be said to fit somewhere between chiropractic and TCM, mainly because an osteopath works to balance bones and joints, but also thinks of the body as having a flow to it that needs to be adjusted to an optimal state.

Naturopathic medicine truly encompasses almost any natural medicine the practitioner cares to learn and practice, but more often than not includes diet and supplement recommendations along with natural medicines such as homeopathy, TCM and others. At Yellow Gazebo, our doctor of naturopathy can also order various tests for you to determine what areas of your internal health may be contributing to your feelings of anxiety.

Natural medicine and anxiety can even be as simple as using massage therapy to reduce symptoms, or physiotherapy to help improve posture and prevent and treat pain that may be exacerbating symptoms.
