What is polymenorrhea?

Polymenorrhea refers to a condition where you are experiencing shorter times between your periods, i.e. your cycle is less than 21 days long, and you therefore experience more than 12 periods each year.  The possible causes include stress, perimenopause, endometriosis, a sexually transmitted disease (e.g. chlamydia or gonorrhea), malnutrition, a disorder of the pituitary gland, or chronic pelvic inflammation.

Your doctor will likely treat any underlying cause with appropriate measures (be sure to ask about potential side effects).  Failing a diagnosis, however, your doctor may recommend a dilatation and curettage (D and C), which involves a scraping of the inner walls of your uterus.

Consider natural health care when it comes to regulating your period.  Nutritional counselling will help ensure that you are receiving all the essential foods, and can help you gain or lose weight where necessary.  Acupuncture and TCM can help balance out your hormone levels, and generally regulate your period through a series of treatments that will likely involve herbs.  Yoga is great for strengthening your body and realigning your cycles, and massage therapy can help you reduce stress.
